Nuts in New York
I moved to United States from Australia in 2011. When I arrived in New York my eyes were wide open and I often still have trouble getting to sleep!
New York City for me was a place of opportunity and freedom. Over time I began to notice how our technologies were impeding that freedom. Freedom, not as choice, not as the selfish desire to do as one wishes, but freedom of mind, freedom of thought, what Krishnamurti called ‘the first and last freedom’.
The implications of that internal freedom or lack there-of, inevitably extend into the world of people, places and things, the world of relationships, and now the world of politics and public policy.
It is a tragedy that that inner freedom is eroding from within in the very city that once epitomized and symbolized freedom to the world.
Human dignity depends upon mental and bodily autonomy. Mandates that impede that autonomy are ethically indefensible and future generations will recognize them as such.
We need to catch up to the future before it gets away from us.
